Corporate Social Responsibility in the Mining Sector in the APEC Region

The Asian Institute of Management Ramon V. del Rosario Sr. Center for Corporate Social Responsibility (AIM-RVR CSR Center) held a roundtable discussion (RTD) on Corporate Social Responsibility in the Mining Sector in APEC Economies last 21 April 2009. It was attended by representatives from different mining stakeholder groups (mining companies, government and civil society). The RTD was moderated by Prof. Maya Herrera of AIM with the participation of two mining experts who gave their corresponding presentations: Mr. Graeme Deegan (Managing Director, Resource Advisory Pty) and Dr. Catherine Coumans (Research Coordinator, MiningWatch Canada).

The RTD is the initial component under the APEC funded project “Capacity Building of Mining Stakeholders in APEC Economies on Corporate Social Responsibility”. The AIM-RVR CSR Center recognizes that although mining has great economic benefits, there are environmental and social concerns that need to be balanced with the economic benefits to ensure sustainable mining. One of the main objectives of this project is to educate the different stakeholders on relevant CSR issues and practices to increase awareness on best CSR practices in mining operations and enhance the implementation of CSR mining programs.
